We have launched our Extreme Sports / Evangelism ministry here in Guatemala! It is designed to reach at risk youth that spend most of their time “hanging out” in the streets, which is common in this culture. Their lack of self worth helps to breed boredom causing them to look for action and excitement in the wrong places. Many are from homes that have no parental guidance and others are homeless. They get caught up in sex, drugs and gang violence. Most of them have never been exposed to the true Gospel.
We have begun by introducing skateboarding ramps in our local area of Coban. We were very blessed to host a Christian skate missions team in August of 2009. They came to help build the ramps and “kick off” the project. At some point, we plan to expand the program to include zip line jumping, rock wall climbing, BMX and off-road motorcycle touring.
Extreme sports is being used as a platform to open doors, build relationships and change lives. It allows us the opportunity to mentor and disciple this generation, which will help to lead them in a positive direction. God will use them to change their nation, one step at a time. Please, pray for us! This ministry has been a huge success and God is using it in a big way. Each summer we host a "Best Trick Contest" and a team from the states will come and join in the fun.
